If you respect the English language, you're not wrong to be disturbed by the debauchery of the language by hiphop slang.
Well, I'm a few lightyears out of the loop when it comes to things such as hiphop, but purely from a perspective of language I don't find anything I've heard out of Eminem or 50 Cent* or ludicrous (sp?) any more disturbing than, say, "All mimsy were the borogoves..."
The collision of art and language can be a trainwreck and a masterpeice at the same time. In the hands of an edgy artist, it's not surprising that language can become an alarmingly pointed object. Debauchery? Well, maybe, I don't know. But language is meant to be used, not admired from afar. We all bend, shape and mutilate it to our purposes. Besides, art that's intended to disturb has a long and distinguished history. now, in a post-post modern internet in-your-face age, the signal (and yes, the noise too) is amplified to the point that it's almost deafening to us old fogeys.
*OK, so I downloaded a 50 Cent song from MSN Music for my son...how come it cost 99 cents?
