You're getting better at this, TB.
"After the Cold War"..."levels the military was at when Reagan left office"...both artfully disguised ways of saying "on William Jefferson Clinton's watch" Check the date on the little essay you pointed us to: 1994! Only two years after Reagan's time and just two years into the Demon Presidency, but still 13 years ago!
And I love the little middle-of-the-road touch "the Peace Dividend fiasco was largely bi-partisan", a great way to make your point without raising defensive hackles. Just enough "shutting down our military has always been a proud leftist cause" to slide in under the radar undetected.
Your point: that the problems of a peacetime military did not begin in 2001. Well, I picked up on that, and you know, I agree with you 100%. In fact, I don't disagree with anything you say or imply in your post. I'm even willing to admit I fell for the peace dividend crap when the Cold War ended myself, hook, line and sinker. I am not ashamed to admit I was mistaken.
As one propagandist to another, I salute your post, it is one of your most effective, and it has the added advantage of being undeniably true. There is one minor, and certainly unavoidable, flaw: the Virginian-Pilot stringer for that story was "ERIC SCHMITT, THE NEW YORK TIMES".
