Ronald Reagan, while strutting his testosterone by bragging to the American people he would never, ever negotiate with terrorists, was doing exactly that, sending his toadies to Iran with chocolate cakes and matched pistol sets as gifts to try and get the Iranians to buy weapons and release hostages. He did this also whle duplicitously supporting the Iraqi aggression against Iran. The money from these arms sales was designated to fund a war in Central America he had been specifically forbidden by Congress to support. If that is not treason, I can't imagine what is. To expect anyone to believe his subordinates were carryng this out without his knowledge stretches credulity to impossible lengths.
After the news got out, his majority congress saw to it he was not impeached, but his partisans in and out of government continued covering and making excuses for him. Even Ollie North, who as much as proudly admitted his crimes, walked away scott free with the Right blessing him as a great American patriot for committing them. I blame the press for this, and their reasons for doing it were strictly self-serving: Reagan was popular for his John Wayne talk (as opposed to his Don Knotts deeds) and attacking him was just not popular or good for business. They went easy on him because it would have cost them ratings and advertisers.
The man and his supporters were traitors, and not because of his politics, anyone with the willingness to drop on his knees to our adversaries like that to perform that kind of secret fellatio while passing himself off publicly as the fearless Cold Warrior, has forever disgraced and humiliated this nation in the eyes of the world. No wonder everyone calls us hypocrites. Every time I even think of the man I feel like I need a bath.
