Like a lot of other websites (Wikipedia for example) Drudge is a good first place to start looking for information, but a lousy place to stop looking.
I think of him like the kid in the old days hawking newspapers. Listening to what he's yelling is a good way to get an idea of what's happening, but you aren't going to get real information if you don't read the paper. It's usually the first news site I check in the morning, but certainly not the last one.
Drudge is important in the news business because he has a very wide readership. A news story linked there will get a lot of eyes on it. A lot of things the mainstream tries to shove to the back pages, or spike entirely, often end up getting exposure there.
Instapundit.com is also a popular place to check out news links. Not as broad a coverage as Drudge, or as fast, but has a lot less "National Enquirer" feel to it.
