You realize that in nearly every election in American history, big or small, if the vote is within 1% there was an automatic official recount? This is the precedent that was ignored. Only we're not talking 1% here, we're talking .001 percent or some such figure. An OFFICIAL recount should have taken place immediately. A PRESS recount that brings the total so incredibly close only further substantiates the need for an official recount. A PRESS recount is not adequate by any historical standard. The Supreme Court stopping the recount, by a 5-4 vote along ideological lines, was unprecedented and I might add undemocratic!
Maybe Bush would have won but that is not the real issue. (We won't even go into the 80,000 retired jews who mistakenly voted for Pat Buchanan, a holocast denier, because of confusingly designed ballots.) The issue is there should have been an official statewide recount right from the get go. Do you agree? Where Gore screwed up was in wanting a selective recount of certain counties. He should have taken the high road and demanded a statewide recount from the begining.
