The Arizona Lights were a hoax

An amateur astronomer who witnessed the lights aimed his trusty
Celestron telescope on the objects and discovered they were a
formation of light aircraft with one running light turned on each.

He reported this to the local media, which pretty much ignored it,
and thus another UFO "legend" was born.
