re: Left-wingers against Michael Moore

Personally, I know next to nothing about Michael Moore. I've never seen any of his films or interviews and other than listening to hearsay commentary about them, know little about them. Moore is a propagandist, and I don't like propagandists, even if I should happen to agree with them. I don't care much for James Carville, either, although I find myself often agreeing with him.

Propagandists tend to be skilled communicators who get their point across by their clever presentation, and by artfully selecting their material so it always shows their side in a good light while slamming their opponents'. It isn't necessary to actually lie to do this, all you need is to cherry-pick the right factoids and string them together in the right order to put together a convincing, yet misleading, case. Ideologues, and I suspect Moore is one, often do this without even realizing it. They may actually believe in the truth of their cause, and often they are convinced of the total honesty of their argument as well. People like this are dangerous, even more dangerous than mercenary liars or hired guns who will carry a sword in either hand, if the price is right. .

I welcome it when partisans on either side are critical of one of their own, or when they break ranks to support an unfairly treated opponent. George Will is one on the right who comes to mind. He may be wrong, but he is a gentleman. I dont think Mr Moore falls in this category, and I know for sure Mr Limbaugh or Ms Coulter don't either. There are honest men out there who are more interested in truth than in winning, and it helps weed out some of the more unscrupulous shouters from the debate. And if you are a partisan, and I freely admit to being one, you soon learn that even your side is wrong about some things, and your opponents are right about others. And on some issues, the truth lies somewhere in between. I tend to respect the commentators, of left or right, who occasionally remind their audience of this; but I am convinced the pundit who always sticks to the party line and is always right, to be a scoundrel.
