Gene Krupa

"Who???" Master drummer of the 1940s, often performed with the Glen Miller Band. Right now I'm listening to "Sing, Sing, Sing!", power big band at its finest, and it features a long solo by Krupa that is clearly the inspiration for Edgar Winter's solo in "Frankenstein". In the 30 years that separated them, I think nobody else equaled Krupa's talent.

Listening to big band reveals, to my ear, that musical genre never die, they just upgrade their instruments. I hear the big band style in some of the powerful rock bands of the late '60s and 70s...they make dance music, and make it loud enough to compel the feet to move. What would Glen Miller's band have sounded like if they'd had the electronic instruments and amplifiers and studio facilities of circa 1970?

Then you have the "symphonic rock" bands like the Moody Blues and to some degree ELP. Speaking of ELP, I recently listened to their "Tiger in a Spotlight", and that's ragtime played with electronic instruments. Like I said, musical genre never die, they just upgrade.
