I heard last night
azstrummer — (archived)

a translation of the remarks which have the media has always said were "Israel should be wiped off the face of the Earth". Seems Ahmadinejad didn't really say that. Apparently the media took some Iranian propaganda from a government source that was paraphrasing the man as gospel and ran with the story.

From what I could tell from the exact Farsi translation of his actual remarks, he was merely calling for regime change in Israel not for its destruction as a country and the actual phrase that got distorted weren't his words at all but instead a retelling of a quote by Ayatollah Komeini (sp?).

Now believe me. I still believe the man's a fruitcake but it's scary to me that this phrase seems to be used as a justification to send the bullets flying. I'll see if I can find a link to the translation I heard read by the talk show host as I was driving home.
