...and if their primary goal is max growth, and if they have centuries to develop their arts, then they can do much better than nature at maximizing human population. We are getting a lot of experience with closed systems like the upcoming Mars mission.

Think of a closed system the size of the earth. Or rather, the size of the containers that you keep all of the humans on earth in.
