I still think there is some misreading going on here

Forget the Native Americans and the European analogy - my contention is that we are going to
head out there some day in some way and since no one is going to be able to stop this migration,
unless we really do something stupid, we might as well get ready for what's out there.

One way to do this is to "ping" the galaxy and see what comes back. If you are worried about
some kind of invasion fleet, don't. All they will need to do is send one ship at relativistic velocities
aimed straight at Earth and that will be all she wrote. And an advanced culture will be able to
detect signs of life on this planet. Heck, we're talking about seeing continents on exoworlds in
a few decades, so imagine what an advanced civ could do.

Anyway, just don't miss the point I said above and before - humans will spread into the galaxy
whether we like it or not, and some day they are going to run across another intelligent species.
Will we get along and make a United Federation of Planets or will it be a Starship Troopers scenario
or will we be rebuffed by beings who are almost godlike? That is the real mystery.
