Space/Science » in reply to Scientists say we should abandon Kyoto

At the Nature website. As far as I can tell, it's not behind a subscription wall.

And now, the opinion column:

The lesson to take away from this is wider than Kyoto, or even environmentalism.

In the face of a perceived crisis, a solution was hastily conceived by people who, for the most part, didn't know all the ramifications of the problem, and applied simplistic thinking to a complex issue.

The "solution" was then rammed down our throats by activists, who wanted to Do Something NOW, and by politicians, who wanted to be perceived as fixing the problem, whether or not the problem was ever actually fixed. Pass the laws NOW! Whether they work or not, the politicians can take credit for being in front of the parade, and they can count on being able to fudge around the failures later.

That Kyoto's basic concept was fatally flawed, and is not even working for those nations that are participating, has been obvious for a few years now. Yet we are still hearing from many people that America was mistaken at best, and evil at worst, for not jumping into this with both feet.

It wouldn't take much thought to come up with other examples of this kind of political "shooting from the hip" in our past. Most having nothing to do with the environment.
