Are we better off? A resounding yes

Were it not for modern medicine my wife would have died in pregnancy last year had the doctor not performed an emergency C-section 2 months short of full term. My son would never have survived being born 2 months premature. By some chance were my wife able to carry my son for another month so he would have had a chance of living, he would have likely died of pneumonia when he got it in December of '06. With breathing treatments he kicked it completely in only 2 days. A month later he got RSV and again kicked it in a matter of days with breathing treatments. My son would have died 3 times already and he's not even 18 months old yet. My 2nd daughter had to be hospitalized for a week for the croupe when she was 18 months. It recurred once the following year, but she didn't need hospitalization that time, because we put her on breathing treatments early.

These are not new diseases or conditions. These common illnesses would have killed half my family and my life would be a lot different now were it not for one drug called albuterol.

All the things you listed are reason for concern, but even with those issues its still not as bad as it was just 50 years ago.

Cheers,

Steve G.
