The syndrome seems to be bone-deep in human nature. It might be someone in a compound in the mountains with hoarded food and weapons. It might be a speaker at the Bali global warming conference. It might be a fundamentalist obsessed with Revelations. It might be a university professor preaching the fall of Western decadence and capitalism. It might be a Middle Easterner waiting for the Imam.
They all have one thing in common: There will be a Great Reckoning, a major near-unimaginable disaster. And when things settle down the world will be run with an iron hand by, if not the Apocalypse Luster himself, someone who thinks exactly like he does.
There are a few other things that tend to be common to all the versions. One of them is that the "Luster" often has considerable difficulty dealing with the real world as it is. In the Next World they will be rewarded for their faith, maybe even seated at the right hand of the new rulers, wielding power and influence they could never have earned through normal channels.
It's not surprising that it can be an appealing delusion.
