I'm willing to allow as how everybody's different. Your explanation of what the song meant to you was rather eloquent, and reading it, I found myself seeing (or hearing) the song in a different light.
I hadn't thought of the context about just setting out...but then I'm likely to start ranting about how E was a disaapointment precisely because it wasn't primitive and tentative enough. It was just TOS scaled back linearly: Phasers were weaker, warp drives went proportionally slower, etc., and StarFleet hadn't discovered the sensual pleasure of velour yet. But it was still recognizably the same universe operating according to famliar rules, rather than a mysterious place in which Archer and the crew never knew what to expect next. What's beyond the next star? Let's just consult the Vulcan database. In the end, they came across as merely the local yokels making their first foray into the big city.
End of rant. Sorry. I actually liked Enterprise a lot, and I'm coming from wishing it had been better. Why did they wait until the final few episodes to do creative things like the parallel universe, or the founding of the Federation? [Must...stop...rant...arrrgh] I'm done.
