In WNC, it's ozone.
It puts the smoke into the Smokey Mountains. You've got a pretty high concentration o' ozone up your way too.
The rocks under your feet have been cooked to well done. Or, as it is known in the trade, "amphibolite grade". The limestones are marbles now, and any light weight hydrocarbons are long gone.
