I generally use "Wingers" in the third person, though admittedly not always. I think it's a bit less divisive to use a categorical term than to say "your side", i.e. "in opposition to my side". But overall I can't really dispute your observation, Lee. As I said, to my eye, that's as nasty as you got; I wasn't saying that "your side" is so extremely awful an insult.
I don't really remember where the term "Winger" came from. I just started seeing it used here and picked up on it. Etymologically it's a contraction of "RightWinger", of course, and the fact that people generally understand that Winger=RightWinger is supported by some Google stats showing the relative prevalence of the left and right flavors:
"leftwinger" : 24,000
"rightwinger" : 51,000
"left winger" : 526,000
"right winger" : 834,000
And appearing on the same page:
"leftwinger rightwinger" : 9,250
'"left winger" "Right Winger"' : 56,600
Interesting, eh?
