This happened to me last week.

“Jimmy – Can you help me”? The voice was distinct, clear and without a doubt human. It made me sit up in bed and check my wife, slumbering beside me, to see if she was having a problem. She woke up as well but when I told her what I had heard she said she didn’t hear anything but asked me if I thought I should call my mother. I checked the digital clock beside us and it was 4:24 AM, too early to call my mother.

The voice was female but I didn’t recognize it. It didn’t sound alarmed or in trouble there was no hint of distress in it. It was if a mother had asked her small son to help her clean up a mixing bowl after making fudge. Sort of a reward to one she cherished knowing that he would first use his finger to scoop up some of the fudge. It was a very maternal sounding voice.

I actually considered calling my mother, who lives about 800 miles away in a retirement home out in Cottonwood area of Salt Lake City, but knew that she likes to sleep late and an early call would startle her. She is nearing 93 years now and is nearly blind but insists that she live on her own rather than with one of her children. We children had to beg her to move into the retirement community from the house that she had lived in for nearly 70 years raising her children including myself – Jimmy.

Jimmy is a name that no one has used to call me since I was a small child. You just can’t call a grown man Jimmy. Jim is alright and James is fine but never Jimmy. I haven’t heard myself being called that for over 60 years. But the voice clearly said “Jimmy – Can you help me”?

Was this an echo from a long gone conversation coming back to me from the either? Or was it a contact from the other side of a dear friend that I had known when I was a child. Was it a plea for help from my mother in SLC using a voice that she knew would pierce though the fog of sleep and rouse me to call her?

I refused to make that call until her normal waking time more because if I called earlier I would have to admit that some small part of me still thinks that mental telepathy is possible. If that is possible then a visit by an angel or God himself would also be possible and my entire view of the universe would be called into question.
