...defy the imagination.
I don't tell folks this too often, because it can lead to obsessive fixations, but there is really no such thing as imagination. Everything you can conceive exists in some form or another in some plane or dimension of existence. Even the subconscious mind is a real place that could be visited if one has the proper form and frequency relationship. Dreams are just one manifestation of these alternative realities. In a broader sense, even this material world is largely a hallucination - a vision made real for a short 100 years, give or take, and then one wakes up in another place, and it's as if one was sleeping and dreamt it all.
As for angels...
Folks who have had NDE or in biblical times were seeing visions which they interpreted and identified as angels were, more often than not, simply seeing beings that are not really physical, and so appear to be hovering and glowing simultaneously. It was a mental vision moreso than a physical presence. This accounts for perception of halos and wings when it is just a field of radiant white energy, which they personified simultaneously with a human form.
The burning bush Moses saw on the mountain had a more simple explanation - St. Elmo's fire.
