This is is not a question of scientific literacy, or even of religious faith. It's about letting your religious superstitions dictate your scientific judgements. And that is exactly what creationism is all about. Anyone who would do that could not be trusted to refrain from forcing those beliefs on others and their children. This IS a litmus test. Where do we draw the line? A flat earth? Santa Claus and the tooth fairy? An Astrologer-General on the Cabinet?
I would vote for an Ayn Rand Republican before I voted for creationist Democrat. There are some things more important than getting my political desires satisfied and frustrating my political opponents.
I can understand someone, however mistaken, sticking by his beliefs. What I can't understand is how someone who doesn't agree with those beliefs, who fundamentally opposes them and finds them dangerous, supporting them because they believe they might get some political or economic benefit out of it.
