The left: 'Its really quite silly and immoral to NOT have health care for children under 18'
The Right: 'ROOOOAAAARRRR INDIGNATION!!!! GRRR!!!! COMMIIIIEEEZZZ'
Me: This isn't about health care for children. It's about forcing universal government health care onto a society where the vast majority have something that already works.
The numbers for that don't come out. We already have a universal health care system for the elderly, and it's not only going broke, but is taking America's long-term financial stability with it.
An airplane made out of gold is pretty, and it won't work either.
And the children? 8.6 million children in all income brackets under 18 were uninsured in 2006, or 11.6 percent of the total population in that category (this is all forms of insurance, including existing government programs). The rate for children in poverty was 19.3 percent, which implies, interestingly, that 80.7 percent of children in poverty have coverage right now.
45 percent of all uninsured people (and their children) are non-citizens. 23 percent of all uninsured people (and their children) had incomes of $50,000 a year or higher. This raises more issues of eligibility and actual need.
If it was really about the children, we could target a program to a few million kids out of 75 million and make it work. But it isn't really.
It's about people for whom "Its really quite silly and immoral to NOT have health care for children under 18" is a sufficient argument for giving over a large portion of their lives and choices to the state.
