I believe there is an intense desire to get America away from Republican extremists again, just as there was after 1976. The nation was fed up with Nixon, and wanted change at any and all costs.
Jimmy Carter was and is a nice guy without the gravitas necessary to control the Federal government. A relatively weak one-term presidency followed by Ronald Reagan in a successful move by the monied to buy back the presidency.
I'm wondering if the heartache of watching this country slide into a moral abyss might lead us again to elect a nice guy without the gravitas to lead in what will be a difficult time. Following the budget problems left by Bush, the international hatreds of the US recently exacerbated and winding down the military-political disasters Bush deliberately failed to resolve would be a terrible task for a well-meaning dictator, let alone the next president.
