... and yes, I would go. :p
I couldn't elaborate on it up there. Somehow, it would be reasuring if 'that' mission would have a physical value of return: Samples, astronauts, actual vehicle/capsule. It would bring the fruits of such an effort back to us on Earth.
I can't fully explain it yet, but if I had a terminal illness, I wouldn't want to go to Mars by myself, but would rather have others that may be in the same situation come along with me. While Mars is fascinating, I would prefer to share the experience with another human being or two.
It would seem rather selfish after all the human studies, effects of space, gravity on the human body, etc that have been conducted (Apollo, Mir, ISS) as well as the technical and engineering efforts by US and other countries that it would become a one way trip. I love the idea of going to Mars and beyond, yes, but for a first time human flight to Mars to just have it end there... well, it would all seem so finite. Is it because Mars is so close?
Hey, sorry, as of right now, those are the feelings I'm getting from this idea. :}

- Impossible for a Western society to do.

- That would be a total waste of money even if you assume (?) the human is expendable
- It seems a bit silly.
- Even the Soviet-Union would never have done this!
