Why does everyone keep assuming...

... that one human to Mars equals suicide/death/failure/no follow on?

I see the idea as making further Mars missions with many people,
in particular colonists a necessity to both "rescue" the solo astronaut
and make their so-called sacrifice, meaningful by allowing many
others to colonize the worlds of space and thrive, all thanks to
this one person who literally led the way.

No, I have my doubts that a single-person Mars mission will be
the first one to the Red Planet, especially if it is operated by a
government agency, but the idea is an uplifting, hopeful, and
bold one - at least for me.
