Ken, if a private company wants to do this, fine, it's a free country. Unfortunately, they won't prove anything that we don't already know. As in the case of an ordinary person holding proof in the palm of their hands, moon rocks... to have other scientists and geologists from around the world study and anylize such proof. A one way trip is easy, but as in the case of Apollo. How long until we go back there? Getting the science and returning a human being back in one piece would be the ultimate success in regards to Mars.
The risk no doubt is there, but presently if you're primarily going there to 'just go' on a one way trip and to reduce the cost. Why go? At least in Space Cowboys, Tommy had company (yes, he was a test pilot too); a situation came up when they were 'working on a mission' and that was a way to solve the problem.
I'm all for private entrepreneurship as well as a government that cares and does involve itself to benefitting the people.

- What?!?
- I'd go, in about 10 years time, when my kids are all safe...
- Yeah, I'd go.

- Impossible for a Western society to do.

- That would be a total waste of money even if you assume (?) the human is expendable
- It seems a bit silly.
- Even the Soviet-Union would never have done this!
