If you want to do science on Mars or any other world...

Send robots, which are becoming more sophisticated and
robust every day.

If your actual goal is colonization, then send humans.

Presumably a future colony will develop enough to have its
own science labs for analyzing rocks et al, which they can
then transmit the data to scientists on Earth.
