Going to ride this bomb all the way down to the ground, eh?

Government needs to be big enough to get the job done. It can be argued that it may seek to be bigger than that, but it needs to be at least that big.

And how big is that? It's twice the size it was when Carter was President, and three times the size it was when Kennedy was president. Oddly, those governments seemed to accomplish pretty much the same things the current one does.

The opposing position is that any government is too much.

Wrong, and a rather feeble strawman. The "opposing position" is that the government we have right now is too much, and that the one liberals are pushing on us as I write this would be way, way too much.

As for all these liberals you seem to find everywhere that want to expand government until it controls everything, I just don't see them.

I discarded several descriptors for this sentence, and settled on "intellectually dishonest."

What I do see is a strong and organized constituency with its own captive political party and propaganda apparat that wants nothing to do with any government at all, UNLESS it is used to provide legal and statutory protections for unregulated commercial activity, intellectual property, tax shelters, consumer litigation, i.e. any activity which might be inconvenient for business.

Also dead wrong. The current Republican Party is nowhere even close to libertarian principles of limited government, and here in the real world Republicans have actually done more in recent years to expand the size of government than the Democrats have. The Democrats would certainly have done worse if they had possessed sufficient political power (wait and see what happens if Obama wins with a strong Democratic congress), but that's neither here nor there.

There is no "strong and organized" limited government constituency. Not in the White House, not in the House (with a very few exceptions), and not in the Senate. Not in any state government I'm aware of, either. Sure as hell not in my state. These principles and ideals are currently confined to pathetic third parties, think tanks, and small off-mainstream media and cultural sources like talk radio.

You used to at least pretend you were tossing this drivel out just to pull my chain. It's getting hard to believe that.
