McCain has strongly pushed nuclear power as a solution, and even Obama has mentioned it in his energy policy statements, although you've got to dig a bit for it.
It may be that pressure has to be brought at the Congressional level to really make an impression. We've also got a lot of damage to undo in the public opinion arena.
When somebody mentions the "Manhattan Project" to discover some new way of producing vast amounts of new energy, I feel obliged to point out that we already HAD a Manhattan Project, and it did just that.
