I'm not really sure about this, but I think I recall reading somewhere that the "Trinity" idea is a concept borrowed from another popular religion of the times (now extinct) and modified for Christian use. This is not an untenable concept, this blending and borrowing between religions occurs all the time, it's a natural process owing to the fact that the populations of different faiths overlap and coincide in space and time, and there is much transfer of symbols and memes between them. It cannot be denied Christianity owes much to Judaism, and Islam to both.
In my own experience, I have seen how popular Catholicism in Latin America has assimilated many religious concepts from Africa, and African nativism in the Americas (Voodoo and SanterÃa) has adopted many Roman Catholic rituals and iconography. It is also well documented that Catholicism also owes much to the Pagan religions of the late Roman Empire.
For an exhaustive (to a fault!) study of these issues, I highly recommend Frazer's "The Golden Bough".
