Then how can you say anything about this 'Jesus' character and how can we possibly think that the christian worldview is humane and highly sophisticated?
If you want to say Jesus is not what you read in the bible, but what you read into the myth- well.... Good luck with that. I don't think its much of a way to go about looking at the universe around us. Why not the Flying Spaghetti Monster at that point?
The root myth of Jesus is this: 'God' created a son (by a highly absurd method), and sent this son off to be blood sacrificed. This represents an act of love by God, and while its absurdly fuzzy about how much will Jesus could have possibly had in the matter (given the clouded metaphysical notions of trinity, divinity, identity, ontology and etc in this mushy metaphor), we are told that this is an act of love by Jesus.
So let me get this straight: A god creating a child to be nailed to a board and die an agonizing death is the archetype for love? Gods creation of a failed people (yes, yes, I know, the whole free will pile. I wont even get into that pile of horseshit here) requires gods creation of a divine son to ritually cleanse the 'sin' (again, another notion ripe with horseshit), so that god can forgive humans for his own act of creating them?
Sorry, there are a lot of beautiful religious metaphors out there, and indeed a lot of beautiful stories. This isn't one of them. The myth of Jesus is a poor attempt to update the bronze age paternalistic religion of a bunch of goat herders to react to/appeal to the pagan cultures of europe that it was being brought into competition with. Its not a story about love, its just another crazy psychotic facet of the 'god of the people of the book'- the terrible, angry, psychotic and wrathful deity that should never have been thought up.
