Oh, I would be careful about saying things like that. There are all the things we pile under the umbrella of Mathematics, and last I checked they both have (a) little empirical access to the universe of things and (b) are progressing along quite nicely.

And I'm not really sure I'd call any decade of the last couple of centuries of philosophy 'barren' either.
