One correction
I stand corrected on one thing, I shouldn't have been as specific as "Western" civilization. Any place where there is peace, stability, and sufficient resources can generate technical and scientific progress. And hippies. China and Egypt are good examples.
Not many people know that the pyramids and monuments were not built by slaves, but by well-fed, and presumably well-paid, workmen.
