Current Events » in reply to Jonathan Haidt: The real difference between liberals and conservatives

Fascinating and insightful,

bu I think he's missed the whole point of the conflict between conservative and liberal. It's not just about social and moral issues, it's about economic ones. It's a lot harder to adopt a "live and let live" philosophy when the other guy wants to implement real policies which affect your life, property, and how you earn your living, not to mention basic civil and cultural policy.

On a totally different tack, I was thinking while I was listening to this guy that we don't listen to lectures any more. When I was in school, there was an active lecture program, and twice a month we heard experts and scholars from many fields come to talk to us. Everyone from Timothy Leary to P.A.M. Dirac. And the lectures, held in a large theatre with close to a thousand seats, were always packed. People asked questions, and talked to each other afterwards. And it was free.

Not only that, there were concerts, poetry, art exhibits, panel discussions, dance recitals, plays, debates, something going on almost every night. The student response was excellent, regardless of major.

Does that still happen? Or are people so interested in getting the degree now that they don't have time or interest in anything extracurricular besides football and binge drinking. The trend to online and commuter colleges is disturbing, too. Actually, USF was a communter school, I commuted and worked, but I, and most other students, participated in these activities.

Are there any students in the Zone? Or are we all old farts?
