It's admirable that Palin wants to spend time with her children. Most women, regardless of their political outlook, spend time with their children and will take them along on business trips when appropriate and when they can afford the extra expense.
This issue is not about motherhood, or about taking children on business trips (though soliciting invitations for them or just bringing them is extremely tacky). It's about public service.
A good mother spends time with her children, and sets a good example for them.
A good public servant will pay for the children's expenses out of her own salary as supplied by the citizens, rather than foist those expenses off on the citizens, who did not elect her children to govern them. A good public servant will certainly not falsify documents to justify such expenses, either at the time or after the fact.
One can only imagine the auditors' conclusion about this behavior if she had worked for private industry and tried such a thing.
A good public servant understands the difference between her money and the people's money, and sets a proper example in its use. A proper example... Maybe this is a little bit about motherhood after all.
