re: three branches?

Of the Republican Party?

I can't reduce it to three...

-- The Dubya Republicans, inheritors of Nixon and McCarthy, known by their attempts to [a] establish an imperial presidency and [b] rule by fear and innuendo.

-- The Reagan Republicans, known by sowing the economic philosophy whose whirlwind we currently reap.

-- The Robertson Republicans, known by their self-righteousness religiosity.

-- The Eisenhower Republicans, those of our parents' generation who vote Repub because they always have, known by their declining numbers in the suburban rings around major American cities.

And, a branch that could be called the Powell Republicans, among whom I also count such as Christie Whitman and Arlen Specter... and among whom I used to count John McCain.

Why he felt compelled to pander -- then submit -- to the first three branches on my list, rather than remain his own man and take his party into the 21st Century, I will never understand.
