More than just outrigger canoes.
Their hulls were shaped in very sophisticated ways, they weren't just hollowed-out logs.
There was even one asymmetrical hulll design that could be sailed forward or backwards. The single outrigger was always kept to leeward, so that coming about required luffing, loosening the standing rigging, moving the tack of the sail to the opposite end of the boat while tilting the mast backward, falling off the wind, repositioning the sheets, and moving the steering oar to the other end of the boat and retightening the stays and shrouds.
And all this with just stone age tools and the few boatbuilding materials available on oceanic islands.
