My take on "elitist".

Certainly agreeing with your point, that some people took it personally, and going a bit past it.

I believe that was a attack with the background, the basis being he's black. It was aimed at part of the Joe Sixpack crowd and part of the extremist Christian crowd and relies upon the residue of prejudice which remains with some groups.

Here's a black man who went to Harvard, who is a lawyer, who became a Senator and now thinks he could be the President of the United States. He's "elitist", isn't he? Obviously thinks he's better than you. Smarter and better.

That doesn't work if the candidate is white. I believe the word "elitist" as used in that campaign is synonymous with "uppity".

Palin strikes a chord with that constiuency because she's not brighter than they, nor more honest or ethical. They can identify with her having a pregnant daughter, a rotten brother-in-law, and her using her office for personal gain. Would damn well like to do it themselves. And they can continue to do that because they are "forgiven". She's not better than they, and may even be a bit worse due to opportunity.

I believe it wouldn't have worked as well did, or even been played, if Obama were white. "Elitist" would never have been an issue.
