I talk about electron transitions in energy levels, but this occurs only in individual atoms and ions
I suppose you are testing me. Get this entry fixed on Wiki right away :

Anyone with any enthusiasm at all can simply look this stuff up :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absorption_band
Even straightforward binary molecules are known to have excited bound states. There are all kinds of interband transitions in solids as well.
Dance, collide, spin. What a life atoms and molecules must lead. I would prefer the isolated life of the optical trap, or the simple life of the extended crystalline lattice, over all that dancing and colliding and spinning. I makes me dizzy!
Usually this is the place where I start to talk about the IIIrd and IVth excited electronic states of my most favorite molecule of all time! But that's UV not IR.
