There's a whole lotta shakin goin on ...

My background is astronomy

Ok, now we're making progress. Speaking of molecular weirdness, it gets even weirder.

So indeed, there is a whole lotta shakin going on. It's a real party in there.

You even got your hot electron and vuv/x-ray party crashers. We got both kinds, country AND western.

'Spectroscopy' as a process is so 'broad' as to make the discrete elements and aspects of it so varied and numerous, such that vast complex models must be constructed to understand even the simplest aspects of individual techniques :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrared_spectroscopy Nobody understands spectroscopy in its entirety, and each technique is highly evolved, but the measurements provide clear limits to the appropriate models. So get out there and wag your butt. Even dissociate if you want. Crash the party nobody cares, most of the dancers will barely even notice you, unless you hit them head on with high enough energy There is plenty of room at the bottom. Zillions and zillions.
