Remember the deptictions of the future in the '50s? Everyone sharing in the new wealth?

As computers and other productivity enhancers came on line, as more and more labor-saving devices became available people would have much more leisure time. There would be time to take family vacations, time to learn foreign languages, engage in hobbies. There would be more time to spend with family, it was going to be gorgeous.

And under the failied capitalistic system, the reality is that the extremely wealthy accrued all of those benefits, and instead of vacations the American dream has become a minimum wage job hopefully with overtime. A life of payday check companies, car title companies and pawn shops. Those companies are proof, along with WorldCom, Enron, the first stock market crash, and the current problems that unfettered capitalism has failed. Utterly. Time for a new economic model, a blend of capitalism and socialism, strong on the socialism. After all, if it's good enough for Wall Street it should be good enough for the rest of the country.

The only way the dream will be realized for the majority of people is if the government provides medical care, education, mass transit, water, clean air and basic housing at no or a minimal cost.

We've had socialism for the multinational corporations for a long, long time. Now we need to extend that to people.
