Regarding earthlike planets

I watched a HC special today on extra-solar planets and they opined that Hot Jupiter planets would likely eject any potential rocky planets in the HZ and the would be drifting aimlesly around the galaxy in a frozen state.

Doesn't sound right to me. It would seem that the ejection would occur before the planet had coalesced sufficiently to be defined as earthlike and might be no more than gas and debris that would dissipate in open space.

Is it generally believed that such planets are drifting around in the galaxy or is this just another nutty theory?
