Here's a more rational take on this

This was a featured diary on DKos by its founder and I think it pretty much sums up just as Buck and I read it, that the paper was targeting extreme right-wing nuts in the vein of a Timothy McVeigh not just dudes with pro-life stickers on their SUV.

Gingrich defends neo-nazi extremists

Of course I got to listen to various calls to arms by the right wing media in our city that were not only alarmist but had huge potential of inflaming the violent wingnuts.

I was very tempted to call the local conservative talk station today and let them know that if the revolutionary rhetoric they were allowing on their station was successful in causing armed insurrection against the government, I'd be on the opposite side in my own citizen's militia and the first place I'd target would be their station and all of the personalities involved in stirring the coals.

It's almost as if these morons don't understand the consequences of calling for Civil War within our states, that they'd be miraculously immune from the danger they'd create. Of course I won't make the call but it'd be very tempting if I had a lot less responsibilities in life such as family, job, future, etc. My threats against that station, even though they would be conditional on a situation we all assume is not going to happen, could be construed a crime and one would have to assume real risk in voicing them despite First Amendment rights.

Somehow though the rabid right wing media seems immune from prosecution in pushing violence through their message. Various court cases have concluded that there must be an immediate response from stimuli to hold the person kindling the flame responsible. Rush or Glenn Beck would have to directly say "Obama's in Denver. Go get him." and then have harm come to him for them to be directly responsible under the law. What they do instead is these insinuations that they know hold sway over the worst of their listening audience. They use terms to describe the impending doom of our country unless real patriots stand up and take action, leaving the details vague but knowing full well that a significant number of their listeners are short a few neurons and armed to the teeth.

Well, they may very well succeed in causing the next Timothy McVeigh but I have to tell you that they severely misunderstand the backlash that would occur should investigators of the tragedy find any link back to them. It's a losing battle and one more moderate conservatives should be helping to regulate because even the innocent end up destroyed when problems are solved with bullets instead of negotiation and compromise.
