My guess is the exact same threat assessments of left wing extremism were going on during the Bush administration but hidden and away from open discussion. We've all heard the verified reports of government plants inside of of anti-war groups and, if we participated in protests, we watched as government and police department vehicles drove by and snapped photos of the protesters.
Bottom line though was the leftists were all talk and no violent action and from what I saw, if discussion started getting too heated or sounded like it would turn towards violence, those people were shouted down by more reasoned voices. I watched that happen over and over on places like DKos. You didn't hear people celebrating the fact that there could be a hit on the President like you do now from the right. You didn't hear the popular left wing media personalities calling for a revolution to set things right. There wasn't racist rhetoric from the left. At worst they talked about how people might rise up if the march to fascism continued to historical levels. It was all about how to deal with the worst case in the future and talk of taking back the government was centered on political solutions. There was no call for them to go out and buy weapons in mass for the coming insurgency.
Timothy McVey is exactly that type of individual that Homeland Security is warning us about not some PETA freak who might spray some government official with blood.
I'm sorry Tom but the jerks on your side are ten times more dangerous than the tree-huggers and peaceniks on ours so get off your high horse. It's about damned time these hate-mongers and rednecks were put on notice that a very powerful and just government is watching them like hawks. Their free speech is still protected but any move towards violent insurrection will be met with the same ferocity Lincoln showed the South.
You're just put off because Democrats are finally showing their spine. Only thing you have going for you is they're out in the open about it.
