Marcia, I actually agree with you on communism

It does suck, though not in its theories. The ideology actually cares about the human condition. Where it fails is that it does not and will never fit the human spirit. Communism fails in its implementation just as a pure democracy would fail (Imagine us all voting for every issue that ever came up).

No country can ever be either a purely democratic or purely socialistic nation. It simply will never fit mankind's programming. We're all a bit of good and evil, compassion and greed, capitalist and socialist. Our primary motivation is survival and quality of life of not only ourselves but also our also our heirs and the friends and allies we leave behind. We will do whatever it takes to ensure that occurs. We will respond strongly and often irrationally whenever any of that is threatened such as when planes fly into towers in our nation or illegal aliens flock across our borders. We will respond to stimulus that makes our world and our mortality make more sense to us such as the influence of religion and superstition.

We will allow others to become our alpha male because they speak louder or make us laugh or cry even if their messages border on the irrational.

Communism, capitalism, flying spaghetti monsterism, none of these are the enemy. They are simply the symptom of our own limitations faced with the myriad of stresses we face daily. We simply use these ideologies to provide whatever it is we require at the time. As our society rides the continual sine wave of ups and downs we reach for whatever tenets get us by in that era. None are evil on their own. None are Nirvana. They all are bound by the forces of human spirit behind them.

In a perfect world communism could flourish just as easily as unfettered capitalism. The only things that can break them are the implementers. The people carrying out the practices will never reach perfection and they'll add their greed, their humanity, their naivety, and their prejudices to whatever system is in place.
