on how Hitler came to power. I recommend, The Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich for easy readability, I read it many years ago and I have forgotten much of it. It was a popular history and there are more scholarly works out there.
Germany was under a crushing WWI treaty (Versailles Treaty) that imposed heavy reparations, and their economy was in shambles from runaway inflation. A change was inevidable and Hitler was in the right place at the right time.
There are always some far out nutty opinions that the USA ,UK, and maybe the Masons, helped him to power but imo there is nothing to it. We were still sort of a bit player in world politics back then and I am not aware of any particular support from England against the German monarchy. In fact, the US was against the Versailles Treaty that contributed to his rise to power.
He was elected on his hatred of Jews much as Southern politicians were once elected on their promise of segregation forever. It was a popular position. The Jews were disliked/resented by nearly everyone in Germany, (note: not violent hatred, more of a smouldering resentment), as well as the Baltic states, Poland, and to some extent every European country. Bottom line, they were not popular anywhere.
He didn't go renegade. He was pretty much psychotic from the get go. His original circle of facist party members consisted of perverts, gangsters, and losers that defy belief.
Of course, you have to remember that all the history is written by the victors but overall, and after filtering through all the hyperbole, there is no doubt that Hitler was one of history's greatest villians
