Profound cultural and demographic shifts in the American populace are leaving the hapless, out-of-date Federalists, uh, I mean, Republicans behind. A party whose ideological base appeals to 30% may mean fabulous success and ratings for an entertainer like Rush Limbaugh but it means disaster in national elections where 50% plus 1 defines success. They do have some valid ideas of the benefits of individualism and limited government but Americans aren't buying what they're selling, and they simply aren't trusted at all by the people. Americans were scared to death when a sizable portion of the Republican Party reacted to the financial crisis last fall by saying, "Oh well, no big deal, let's just sit and do nothing and let the markets and the financial system work it out on its own." That was the last straw and assured Obama's election. Call it socialism if you want, but Americans more and more want a government that acts and reacts for the greater good of the people, rather than sitting on the sidelines and letting disasters occur.
