As for the tidal forces... I looked up the figures and then looked at the relevant equations... and realised that the centripetal force on an extended body is equal to the horizontal tidal force but in the opposite direction. So no net force there... *sigh* Working out the gravitational field of a cylinder might be useful, so that's my next task.
