"I actually went back and read it!"
That's always a good idea.
"I didn't enjoy reading it either, but the truth isn't always pretty, and it isn't always what we want to hear. If it makes you feel any better, I don't think that politics, left or right, has anything to do with the loss of enthusiasm in space. As the man says,
"...a lot of the public enthusiasm for space colonization subsided. Some people stuck with it, and became bitter. Many simply gave up." "
I actually enjoyed reading it, I just thought one should ask the further question why people were not supporting such things.
Lots of space cadets have argued that the problem America people are stingy towards the space program.
Yet we are spending somewhere over 1 trillion bailing out banks- and bankers don't generally poll high in public opinion, historically.
The amount money being toss out the door, to be utterly wasted, exceeds the entire cost of NASA since inception- plus you can probably throw in the Iraq war.
Maybe people are hoping there is a pony in all this manure.
Maybe, there is.
