Deeper and deeper

I'm afraid that it gets dodgier the more I look. Your link takes me to a site that has what I infer are the actual photographs that Howe describes, complete with The Hand. The photos show a document that almost certainly was produced on a modern word processor. Two fonts and multiple variations (italic, boldl, underlined), justified left and right margins, the repeating headers and footers, all of it just reeks of computerized word processing.

It's not impossible that somebody could have produced a document that looked like that, back in 1954. But why? It would've required the sort of effort that in those days was reserved for producing books and magazines, hundreds of hours sweating over a Linotype typesetting machine, cutting and pasting and revising. Nobody would've lavished that kind of effort on a government report that purportedly had a highly restricted circulation.

Just now I revisited Ms. Howe's pages at the original link, and it takes on a whole new interpretation. I think that what I'm seeing are the originals that somebody photographed with a film camera. Those images (Howe's) are clear and they're perfectly aligned horizontally and vertically and all the text is there (some of it isn't obscured by the fold of the opposite page, as it is in the photos).

Which brings us to the mystery of the color front page, which is hardly a mystery now, using a scenario in which it's just the original, as printed out on a color printer, photographed on black-and-white film. I think that that color front page is the most damning evidence of all.

In general I think that David's much too quick to dismiss things out of hand, but in this case, I can hardly disagree with his assessment. How can I possibly believe that this is real?
