...exactly Sawyer. Directedness and even "purposive" behaviour of the evolving system can be an emergent property, not an external "knob-twiddling" by a 'god'. Doesn't mean there is or isn't such an external agency, but it is rather cryptic in its behaviour if it's there.
Of course, as a lapsed agnostic, I believe there is an agent at some level, but I'm too aware of the idiocy of "Intelligent design" claims to believe that the 'hand of God' can be non-problematically extracted from the data.
